Bare naked ladies: Women around the world go topless for equal rights

Topless women and men marched in around 60 cities worldwide.

The “topless parades” were held in solidarity with street performers in New York’s Times Square.

The popular entertainers stand outside almost starkers – except for some strategic body paint – and pose with tourists.

Critics have complained about bare-breasted women seeking tips in the area popular with visitors, but appearing topless is legal in New York state.

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio is among those who think the body-painted women are a nuisance.

He said: “Our current laws do make it harder to enforce in the way we might like to. There is a First Amendment protection for begging.

“There is a First Amendment protection for painting yourself and displaying yourself in a certain fashion.

“It makes no sense, but I understand that is a First Amendment protection.”

He added that he would try to find “legislative and regulatory solutions” to the thong-wearing women – even though it is perfectly legal.

He continued: “This situation is going to change, this is what I’ll guarantee you.

“I’m not going to tolerate it – we’re going to change things.

“I think we have just begun to recognise all the tools available here.

“But you know, this is a situation that I don’t accept and we will deal with it very aggressively.”

More than 60 protest events organised by GoTopless took place on Sunday, dubbed “Go Topless Day”, in cities from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to Paris in France, from Rimini in Italy to Seoul, South Korea.

Future topless parades are being planned in even more cities, including Burkina Faso in west Africa and London.

Rael, founder of GoTopless, said: “As long as men are allowed to be topless in public, women should have the same constitutional right.

“Or else, men should have to wear something to hide their chests.”

The organisation posted on Facebook: “Give us a break Bill de Blasio! So the Desnudas [naked women] disturb the morals of NYC in Times Square but not the Naked Cowboy?

“What’s the double standard? The human body whether male or female is sexy and SO WHAT?”

The Naked Cowboy – a man who stands in Times Square completely starkers save for a stetson and cowboy boots – wore a bikini top and pants in solidarity with the women.
