PUPILS, parents and teachers at a Walsall school came together to celebrate diversity as part of a showcase to promote cultural, racial and religious tolerance.
Charles Coddy Walker Academy, in Derby Street, put on a World Cultures Day showcase in the run up to the UN’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, which was held on Thursday, May 21 and aims to help people learn about the importance of cultural diversity and harmony.
The school’s community arrived in traditional dress, and brought in dishes from their culture for all guests to sample and enjoy.
Reception and Early Years classrooms were also transformed into a micro-world for children, with their mums and dads invited in to discover with all the senses.
The event concluded with a master class in Bhangra dancing from teacher Nadeem Bashir.
Headteacher Lisa Chambers said the recent event was a success.
She added: “Being able to experience different cultures in such a fun and accessible way will help our children to appreciate and respect the cultural backgrounds of their classmates and will inspire them to learn more about the wide world that surrounds them.”
The event was supported by the school’s sponsor, The Erudition School’s Trust, and a range of Walsall businesses, including Tesco Extra and Hargun’s Sweet Centre.
