Fire Emblem If, revealed to be Fire Emblem Fates in the west, has been confirmed to have same-sex marriage.
Nintendo have confirmed in a recent interview with Polygon that Fire Emblem Fates will see the return of the much-loved marriage system from Fire Emblem Awakening along with the option for same-sex marriage. Fire Emblem Awakening also allowed for characters with an S-rank bound to also have children which became playable character but no word on children within Fire Emblem Fates. Additionally, Fire Emblem Fates will include an A+ ranking for character of the same-sex.
“We can confirm that Fire Emblem Fates for Nintendo 3DS, which launches in Japan on June 25, 2015, and is coming to the U.S. and Europe in 2016, includes the possibility for a same-sex marriage to take place between the main character created by the gamer and another character in the game,”
In the interview Nintendo comment on the two editions of the game titled Conquest and Birthright and how each will feature one character that can partake in same-sex marriage. For Conquest it is a male character with Birthright offering a female character for players to marry. Additionally, the third, downloadable edition which is set to be available at a later date will constrain both characters. What this means however is that if you want to have a relationship between two male characters then you need to purchase the Conquest edition of the game or the downloadable third storyline. This is the same for a female relationship but of course with the Birthright edition or again with the download content.
“We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate and, at the same time, we will always design the game specifications of each title by considering a variety of factors, such as the game’s scenario and the nature of the game play,” Nintendo explained in a statement to Polygon.
Fire Emblem Fates releases later this week in Japan and sometime in 2016 for the west for Nintendo 3DS. With the addition of the marriage system many players will surely be happy now making the wait for Fire Emblem Fates to release in the west just that little bit hard.
