MP urges women to get into politics

Women in PoliticsDiane Abbott will be speaking at the Jersey Community Relations event to encourage local women to stand in the October 2014 States elections.

The event is part of the Women in Politics series organised by the Trust.

Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987 and the first African Caribbean woman to be elected to Parliament will be speaking of her experiences as a leading politician in the UK.

The event aims to reach out to islanders who wish to find out about being elected for political office.

Trust Chairperson Dr Elena Moran said: “We are very pleased to welcome Diane to Jersey. She will be joined by a panel of current female States members to provide both national and local perspectives of political life.

“As part of its promise of promoting equality and diversity, the JCRT is committed to tackling the under representation of women in politics. We believe that, without politicians who represent and reflect the electorate, you cannot have representative policy.”

The launch event will be followed by a series of weekend workshops for women in media training and learning about the States leading up to the October elections.
