Pinterest is the latest company to share it’s annual workforce diversity stats and outlined its goals for 2016 as well. In addition, the company also announced some goals essentially refocusing its new hiring practice.
According to the Pinterest Blog, said Evan Sharp, co-founder of Pinterest stated that, “By sharing these goals publicly, we’re holding ourselves accountable to make meaningful changes to how we approach diversity at Pinterest.” He added, “We’ll also be sharing what’s working and what isn’t as we go, so hopefully other companies can learn along with us.”

At the moment, around 42 percent of the company’s workforce is women. This is a slight increase from the 40 percent in 2014. However, employees who work in technical roles and engineering comprised of 79 percent and 81 percent respectively are men.
1. To help diversify Pinterest, the company had laid down its goal for the next year:
2. Increase hiring rates for full-time engineering roles to 30% female.
3. Increase hiring rates for full-time engineers to 8% under-represented ethnic backgrounds.
4. Increase hiring rates for non-engineering roles to 12% under-represented ethnic backgrounds.
5. Implement a Rooney Rule-type requirement where at least one person from an under-represented background and one female candidate is interviewed for every open leadership position.
To achieve those results, Pinterest plans to expand recruiting to new universities, and start an intern program specifically for “freshman and sophomore students from under-represented backgrounds.” In addition, Pinterest is launching a new initiative dubbed ‘Inclusion Labs’ in partnership with a strategy firm called Paradigm. This project will focus on developing key strategies around diversity and will also find ways to share those findings with the tech community at large.
The report stated, “By sharing these goals publicly, we’re holding ourselves accountable to make meaningful changes to how we approach diversity at Pinterest. We’ll also be sharing what’s working and what isn’t as we go, so hopefully other companies can learn along with us. Over time, we hope to help build an industry that is truly diverse, and by extension more inclusive, creative and effective.”
