Celebrities and fashion icons unite to back Amnesty on LGBTI rights in Russia

Diversity Today

A group of international fashion icons and celebrities are protesting the treatment of LGBTI people in Russia by donning Pussy Riot style balaclavas in a new campaign in support of Amnesty International.

Celebrities including Lily Allen, Kate Moss, Colton Haynes and Courtney Love have joined forces with a group of models and fashion designers in a new campaign in solidarity with Amnesty International and its campaign to protect LGBTI people in Russia.

The Proud To Protest project was the brainchild of English fashion designer Gareth Pugh and SHOWstudio photographer Nick Knight.

The first of the two videos was launched on 14 February to mark the start of London Fashion Week and the Sochi Winter Olympics and a second was released on 21 March.

In the meantime more and more celebrities have contributed to the project.

‘SHOWstudio joined Pugh and Amnesty International in their fight against the prejudice and violence directed towards the LGBTI community in Russia,’ SHOWstudio posted to YouTube in explaining the videos.

‘Pugh and longtime collaborator Nick Knight, SHOWstudio’s founder, asked respected figures from across the fashion community, including Kate Moss, Roksanda Ilincic, Katy England, Nasir Mazhar and Henry Holland, to demonstrate their opposition to homophobia by participating in striking 20-second short videos.’

In the videos the celebrities wear Pussy Riot style balaclavas and remove them to reveal their identities while endorsing the statement, ‘I support Amnesty International in their fight against the prejudice and violence directed towards the LGBTI community in Russia.’

The punk group Pussy Riot have been highly critical of the treatment of LGBTI people in Russia and members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were recently in the United States to speak out against the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
